Jason Chaffetz might be leaving the House before his term ends, but that doesn’t mean he won’t try to take a few more shots at Obama before he goes. Chaffetz tweeted earlier, “Obama’s $400,000 speech could prompt Congress to go after his pension https://usat.ly/2pyJUSb  via @USATODAY Yes, it will.” Chaffetz wants to go after Obama’s Presidential Pension because of his speeches.

According to the USA Today article he cites:

Chaffetz and Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, the sponsor of the companion Senate bill, say they will re-introduce the Presidential Allowance Modernization Act this month. The bill would cap presidential pensions at $200,000, with another $200,000 for expenses. But those payments would be reduced dollar-for-dollar once their outside income exceeds $400,000.

While there might seem to be a logic here, it is definitely an attack on Obama specifically. Bush also made millions from speeches:

Bush has been raising his profile in a different, and lucrative, way: He has raked in millions of dollars since leaving office by making scores of speeches that typically earn him six figures a pop. … Those speeches have earned Bush about $15 million, following in the golden path blazed by his predecessor, Bill Clinton.

Even Reagan made approximately $1.8 million a year from speeches. Chaffetz only wants to punish Obama for doing something Presidents have done since the 1800s—give speeches. And at least since Reagan, they’ve made a lot of money doing so. The only difference between Obama and the 43 presidents before him? Skin color.
